India vs New Zealand, 2nd Test, Day 1 Highlights: India were given an early jolt after losing captain Rohit Sharma for a nine-ball duck before the close of play in Pune. They were 16/1 in 11 overs, trailing New Zealand by 243 runs. Washington Sundar delivered the goods with a maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket. He finished with excellent bowling figures of 7/59 as New Zealand were bowled out for 259 in their first innings after opting to bat first. Rachin Ravindra continued his superb start to the India tour with a solid half-century but Sundar produced an excellent delivery to have him bowled on 65 giving his team a big breakthrough. The offie, who replaced Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI, struck again at the stroke of tea and sent back Tom Blundell. R Ashwin struck again for India to break another good partnership with the scalp of a well-set Devon Conway on 76. Conway edged one to be caught-behind.
Conway completed his fifty right at the start of the second session as he clattered three fours in an over of Jasprit Bumrah. In the morning session, India landed two blows via Ashwin after New Zealand opted to bat first in Pune. Ashwin first removed Tom Latham before getting rid of Will Young.
Earlier, India announced three changes in the playing XI as out-of-form KL Rahul made way for Shubman Gill. Washington Sundar and Akash Deep were also included into the team in place of Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.
India Playing XI
Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah
New Zealand Playing XI

India carried that momentum into the third session, with Sundar picking up where he left off. Although the ball wasn’t turning sharply, Sundar extracted enough movement off the pitch to chip away at the Kiwi middle and lower order. He registered his career-best figures of 7/59 in 23.1 overs, leading India’s resurgence after a challenging first half of the day. From what seemed like a comfortable position at 197/3, New Zealand suffered a dramatic collapse, losing their last 7 wickets for just 62 runs and ultimately being bowled out for 259.
India’s bowlers appeared to be struggling, as Conway and Ravindra were content to milk the singles and occasionally find the boundary. However, just when the Indian fielders began to look flat, Ashwin provided a much-needed breakthrough, nicking off Conway. Despite that wicket, India’s defensive approach allowed another partnership to build, but Washington Sundar turned things around with two crucial strikes towards the end of the second session, halting New Zealand’s charge.
Earlier in the day, after winning the toss, Tom Latham had no hesitation in opting to bat first. The Kiwi openers got off to a solid start, navigating the new ball without much difficulty. India managed two breakthroughs in the first session through Ravichandran Ashwin, but consistent pressure eluded them due to the in-out fields, allowing the visitors to rotate the strike and keep the scoreboard ticking. In the second session, New Zealand continued to score at a steady pace, with Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra both cruising to their fifties.
End of an enthralling day of Test cricket! A day that began encouragingly well for New Zealand with the bat but India fought back brilliantly with the ball on the back of a stellar bowling performance from Washington Sundar. As a result, they will slightly be the happier of the two sides at the end of the opening day.
