Basic Fixes
- Move close to the router: Ensure your Android phone is within the optimum connection range of your router.
- Restart the router and your Android phone: Long-press the Power button on your router or replug its power source to restart it. To restart your Android phone, press the physical Power button or Power + Volume Up buttons, and tap Restart.
- Change your Wi-Fi network name in router settings: Open your router admin page (e.g. 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1), locate ‘WLAN’, and change its SSID value to change your Wi-Fi network name.
- Check you aren’t blacklisted on the network: Check ‘User Info’ on your router admin page to verify that your device isn’t blacklisted on your network. For public networks, contact the network administrator.
Fix 1: Manually Forget the Wi-Fi Network and Reconnect
Existing issues with your Wi-Fi connection can freeze your Android phone at the ‘Obtaining IP address’ message. Forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect to solve the issue.
Step 1: Open Android settings, select Network & internet, and tap Wi-Fi.

Step 2: Select your connected network and tap Forget. Re-scan for the Wi-Fi network to reconnect.

Fix 2: Enable DHCP Settings in Router
Your router’s DHCP server menu assigns IP addresses to connected devices. If disabled, it won’t assign an IP address to your phone resulting in an indefinite ‘Obtaining IP Address’ message. Access your router settings to enable it.
Note: The DHCP settings page can vary on your router admin page.
Step 1: Access your router admin page (type 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the URL and press Enter) and select Administration.

Step 2: Scroll down and enable the DHCP Server under LAN Parameters. Click Apply to save changes.

Fix 3: Connect Using a Static IP Address
If your Android phone can’t automatically obtain an IP address, assign it a static IP address to connect to the Wi-Fi network.
Step 1: Open Android Settings, select the Wi-Fi network, and tap Advanced options.

Step 2: Select IP settings and set it to Static. Enter the static IP details and tap Connect to establish the connection.

Fix 4: Factory Reset Your Wi-Fi Router
Incorrect router settings can prevent your Android phone from connecting to Wi-Fi, causing the ‘Obtaining IP address’ issue. Reset your router to its factory defaults to remove misconfigurations.
Tip: Press the physical Reset button on the back of your router for 5-7 seconds to factory reset it.
Step 1: Open your router admin page and select Administration.

Step 2: Scroll down and click Reset next to Reset Factory Settings. Your router will automatically reboot to restore its factory defaults.

Fix 5: Reset Network Settings
If resetting the router doesn’t help, reset all network settings on your Android phone to restore the Wi-Fi connectivity.
Step 1: Select System under Android Settings and tap Reset options.
Step 2: Tap Reset Wi-Fi, mobile network & Bluetooth, and select Reset settings. Enter your device passcode when prompted to confirm.
