Xiaomi apologizes after user of security camera saw images from strangers’ homes
The user says he connected a Mijia camera to Google Nest Hub

Imagine hooking up a home security camera to your smart display, but instead of seeing footage of your family… you see still images of strangers’ homes.
A Reddit user said that’s exactly what happened to him when he tried to stream his Xiaomi Mi Home Security Camera on a Google Nest Hub. Pictures he posted show a baby in a crib, a man sleeping in an armchair, an empty living room, and more. The discovery prompted Google to disable all Xiaomi smart devices’ integration with Nest Hub and Google Assistant.
Xiaomi says it has now fixed the issue. In a statement to Abacus, it apologized to users and says the bug was caused by a cache update on December 26. The upgrade was “designed to improve camera streaming quality” and the issue “only happened in extremely rare conditions” when network connection was poor. It says the problem won’t happen if the camera is linked to Xiaomi’s Mi Home app.
